Jonathan de Guzman deflection gifts West Bromwich Albion victory

An own goal from Jonathan de Guzman proves enough to edge West Bromwich Albion past Swansea City in tight encounter at The Hawthorns.

A tight encounter between West Bromwich Albion and Swansea City has been settled by a piece of bad luck for Jonathan de Guzman.

With the scores deadlocked at 1-1 Gareth McAuley's header was cleared off the line by Angel Rangel, only to hit De Guzman on the back and go beyond Michel Vorm.

Swansea had taken the lead early on through Luke Moore, who headed home against his old club for a second goal in as many games.

Michu missed a pair of chances from close range to extend their advantage and they were punished before the break by Romelu Lukaku.

The Belgian striker met a pinpoint cross from Graham Dorrans to turn home at the near post and level the match before the break.

Steve Clarke's side were handed a great chance to go ahead early in the second half when Lee Mason pointed to the penalty spot after Wayne Routlegde brought down James Morrison.

Lukaku stepped up for the visitors but had his tame effort held by Vorm.

Swansea failed to clear their lines and De Guzman's unfortunate intervention proved enough to earn the Baggies all three points.

The visitors felt they should have had an equaliser late on as Roland Lamah's effort was controversially ruled out for offside.
