Premier League new boys West Ham United lose to Oxford United in a competitive pre-season friendly at the Kassam Stadium.

League Two side Oxford United have caused a pre-season shock by beating West Ham United in a competitive friendly at the Kassam Stadium.

The visitors' lineup included a host of names with top-flight experience, including George McCartney, Mark Noble, Kevin Nolan and Carlton Cole.

Nevertheless, roared on by a vocal crowd of 4,780, it was Oxford who started brightest and deservedly took the lead on 36 minutes.

Debutant Sean McGinty's cross for Sean McAllister was intercepted, however the Hammers defence failed to clear their lines and Deane Smalley capitalised by burying a first-time shot beyond goalkeeper Stephen Henderson.

West Ham improved after the break and almost levelled the scores when substitute Robbie Hall followed a pacy solo dribble with a low shot that rattled the post.

Sam Allardyce's team now visit Colchester United on Saturday, before flying to Germany for a three-match tour and training camp.
