Preview: Wigan Athletic vs. Wycombe Wanderers - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League One clash between Wigan Athletic and Wycombe Wanderers, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Wigan Athletic will have the chance to claim a second straight victory when they play host to Wycombe Wanderers in Tuesday's League One fixture.

The visitors, meanwhile, have proven to be a tough team to beat in recent weeks, having avoided defeat in their last five competitive matches.

After drawing their opening two league games of the new year, Wigan finally claimed their first victory of 2024 in Saturday's home clash with Reading.

Thelo Aasgaard scored his fourth competitive goal of the season to guide the Latics to a narrow 1-0 victory, which moved them up to 13th place and eight points clear of the drop zone.

The result extended Wigan's unbeaten home run to four league games, while they currently have the fifth-best home record in the division with 25 points from 13 matches at the DW Stadium.

Having kept four clean sheets in their last five home league matches, Shaun Maloney's side will be looking to produce another strong defensive display on Tuesday.

The Latics have fared well in recent meetings with Wycombe, with the last five head-to-head matches yielding three wins and two draws.

While Wigan celebrated a win on Saturday, Wycombe had the weekend off after their away clash with Port Vale was called off due to a frozen pitch.

As a result of the postponement, Matt Bloomfield's side dropped below Wigan and down to 17th place, although they remain seven points clear of the drop zone.

Wycombe are now set to return to action for the first time since missing out on all three points against Lincoln City at Adams Park, where Dale Taylor saw his first-half opener cancelled out by Ethan Erhahon.

That result extended their unbeaten run to five competitive matches, but it also left them with just one win from their last 15 league outings.

If they are to claim a rare victory on Tuesday, the Chairboys will need to beat Wigan for the first time since September 2001.

Team News

Wigan remain without the injured duo of Scott Smith and Tom Pearce, while Callum Lang is unlikely to be ready for the midweek encounter.

Martial Godo is also a doubt after he was forced off in the first half of Saturday's clash with Reading due to an injury issue.

Stephen Humphrys replaced Godo against the Royals, and he could be presented with a starting place if the 20-year-old is unable to take his place in the side for Tuesday's contest.

As for the Chairboys, they are unable to call upon Tjay De Barr and Brandon Hanlan, who are both sidelined with knee injuries.

Jason McCarthy and Jasper Pattenden are back in full training, but they are unlikely to be fit for Tuesday's contest.

Chem Campbell, who spent the second half of last season at Adams Park, has returned to the club after signing on loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers, and the 21-year-old is expected to feature among the substitutes at the DW Stadium.

Wigan Athletic possible starting lineup:
Tickle; Clare, Hughes, Chambers; Sessegnon, Smith, Adeeko, Jones; Humphrys, Aasgard, Magennis

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Stryjek; Grimmer, Tafazoli, Low, Leahy; Wheeler, Potts; McCleary, Taylor, Sadlier; Vokes

We say: Wigan Athletic 2-1 Wycombe Wanderers

Although Wycombe are unbeaten in five matches, Wigan tend to save their best performances for the DW Stadium, and we think that they will make full use of home advantage to claim a narrow victory on Tuesday.
