Wrexham win FA Trophy on penalties

Wrexham beat Grimsby Town in a penalty shootout to lift the FA Trophy at Wembley this afternoon.

Wrexham have won the FA Trophy 4-1 on penalties, having been level at 1-1 with Grimsby Town after extra time.

Andy Cook gave the Mariners the lead in the 70th minute, firing in a rebound from close range.

However, the Welsh side were awarded a penalty inside the final 10 minutes, which Kevin Thornton put past the Grimsby keeper.

With the sides level at full time, an extra 30 minutes was played at Wembley, but neither team could find a winner.

Wrexham made a strong start to the penalty shootout, but Sam Hatton and Richard Brodie were off-target with Grimsby's opening two spot kicks.

Joe Colbeck netted with Grimsby's third, but Johnny Hunt stepped up to add Wrexham's fourth, sealing the trophy for the Dragons.
