Defending champion Roger Federer is beaten in the Rotterdam Open quarter-finals by world number 39 Julien Benneteau.

Roger Federer has suffered a surprise defeat in the Rotterdam Open quarter-finals to world number 39 Julien Benneteau.

World number two Federer, who came into the tournament as the defending champion, was beaten by his French opponent in straight sets 6-3 7-5.

The victory was Benneteau's second against 17-time Grand Slam champion Federer in their six meetings.

The result means that Andy Murray could have a chance of becoming the world number two if he wins next month's ATP 1000 event in Indian Wells.
