Ekaterina Makarova has booked her spot in the third round of the Madrid Open following a 1-6 6-2 6-3 victory over world number three Victoria Azarenka on Wednesday.
It was Azarenka that dominated the opening set of tennis, securing successive breaks at 1-2 before serving her way to the first set after 40 minutes.
The Russian recovered in the second, however, securing two breaks of her own to take the second-round tie into a deciding set.
Azarenka broke in the opening game of the third, but successive breaks of serve for Makarova in the latter stages allowed the Russian to serve her way into the next round.
