Andy Murray: 'Nick Kyrgios not a bad guy'

Andy Murray says that controversial Australian Nick Kyrgios has "made some mistakes" but is not a bad person.

Andy Murray has said that he thinks Nick Kyrgios is not a bad person, as he prepares to take on the controversial Australian in the first round of the US Open.

Kyrgios was handed a $10,000 (£6,400) fine and a suspended ban after making insulting remarks to Stanislas Wawrinka about his girlfriend during their recent Rogers Cup match.

The 20-year-old was also accused of 'tanking' during the first set of his fourth-round loss to Richard Gasquet at Wimbledon, but Murray believes that the experiences will help him to mature.

"I don't think he's a bad guy," Murray told BBC Sport. "He's just got to learn a little bit and he'll be fine."

"What happened a few weeks ago was wrong. I don't defend that and I'm sure he knows it was wrong now as well.

"But he's also an extremely young guy who's still learning about himself and how to behave in certain situations. He's made some mistakes but I just think that it's important to remember we're all human beings."

Kyrgios has never advanced beyond the third round at the US Open.
