Feliciano Lopez: 'Mardy Fish was the better player'

Feliciano Lopez insists that opponent Mardy Fish was the better player, despite outlasting the American over five sets at the US Open.

Feliciano Lopez has admitted that he was an undeserving winner in his second-round clash with Mardy Fish at the US Open.

Fatigue put paid to the hopes of Fish, who will now retire from professional tennis, during the five-set encounter, and Lopez has heaped praise on the American after booking his place in the last 32.

After the match, the 33-year-old said: "I have to say that he was a better player than me overall.

"I was lucky I won the fourth set, and then he was cramping in the fifth. I think he deserved the win."

Lopez will now face Milos Raonic after the Canadian beat Fernando Verdasco in four sets.
