Kim Clijsters and Bob Bryan have been eliminated from the US Open mixed doubles competition by Ekaterina Makarova and Bruno Soares, closing the book on Clijsters's professional career.
The Belgian - knocked out of the singles by Laura Robson - and her American partner lost a super tie-break 10-12.
They had saved four match points before Makarova and Soares finally clinched victory on the fifth.
Clijsters was also ousted from the women's doubles tournament, along with her partner Kirsten Flipkens, by Chinese duo Chuang Chia-jung and Zhang Shuai.
The 29-year-old, a three-time champion in New York, has now retired from the sport.
