Johanna Konta exits US Open in fourth-round defeat to Petra Kvitova

Johanna Konta exits the US Open in the fourth round by losing to Petra Kvitova in straight sets.

Johanna Konta has exited the US Open in the fourth round by losing to Petra Kvitova in straight sets.

Both women gave nothing away on serve as they matched each other stroke for stroke, and the first set looked to be heading towards a tie-breaker. However, the fifth seed capitalised on a double fault from the Brit and seized the only break point to secure the set 7-5.

Konta battled well against Kvitova in the second set, but the two-time Wimbledon champion's quality began to show as she won the crucial points to earn another break of the 24-year-old's serve in the second set.

Kvitova held her nerve on her serve to see out a 7-5 6-3 victory in the second to seal her place in the quarter-finals of the competition.

The number five seed will play Flavia Pennetta in the last eight.
