Arsene Wenger vows to spend money

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger vows to bring more "great players" to the club following the signing of Mesut Ozil, and reveals that he is prepared to spend money to do so.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has vowed to spend more money in an attempt to coax "great players" to the club.

The Gunners, who broke their all-time transfer record when they signed Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for £42.5m during the summer, have made a fine start to the season and currently sit joint-top of the Premier League table after seven games.

The Ozil signing came after years of fans urging Wenger to spend money in order to put them back among England's elite, but the veteran manager revealed that he only felt comfortable splashing out this season after carefully managing the club's finances since the Emirates Stadium was built in 2006.

"Of course, it's a big responsibility to spend that amount of money. But I feel comfortable with it because we had the money to do it. Before we couldn't have done it because we didn't have the money available. It's as simple as that," Wenger told the club's official website.

"I had a huge sense of responsibility when we built the stadium to get the club through it without going bankrupt. The first years were difficult, and also explained why we lost some players.

"Now we are in a more comfortable financial position, I - more than anyone - want the great players to play for Arsenal Football Club. If we have to spend the money to do that, I will spend the money."

Arsenal have not lost a match since Ozil joined the club, and will look to keep that unbeaten streak going when they face Norwich City on Saturday.
