Wolverhampton Wanderers are allegedly on the brink of completing the signing of Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha, initially on a loan deal.

Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly moved to the brink of completing the signing of Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha.

Since Julen Lopetegui agreed to replace Bruno Lage as head coach last month, it has become clear that Wolves will be active during the January transfer window.

The Spaniard has arrived at Molineux with the club sitting bottom of the Premier League table, four points adrift of safety and having netted just eight goals in 15 matches.

Lopetegui acknowledged at his official unveiling to the media that he wanted to make changes to his first-team squad, going as far as admitting that Cunha was a player on his radar in a later interview.

Despite Wolves' interest in the Brazil international, it was later reported that the 23-year-old had admirers in several other clubs in England's top flight.

That included Arsenal, who require a replacement for the injured Gabriel Jesus, as well as the likes of Everton and Leeds United.

Nevertheless, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Wolves are close to winning the race for Cunha's signature.

The West Midlands outfit are said to have reached a verbal agreement with Atletico and have also successfully negotiated personal terms with Cunha.

Wolves are in line to sign Cunha on a loan deal until the end of the season with the obligation to complete the permanent signing for at least €40m (£35m) in the summer.

A deal became a possibility due to Atletico being eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage and failing to earn a spot in the Europa League after Christmas.

Even when European football was part of his club's schedule, Cunha made just two starts and 14 substitute appearances during the first period of the campaign.

That is despite Diego Simeone's side having also endured an indifferent spell in La Liga, Atletico currently in fifth position and 13 points adrift of leaders Barcelona.

Wolves have also been linked with Atletico defender Felipe, although it is unclear whether they will progress with that interest over the coming weeks.
