Atletico Madrid rout weakened Astana

Goals from Saul Niguez, Jackson Martinez and Oliver, as well as a late Denis Dedechko own goal, give Atletico Madrid a comfortable 4-0 win over Astana.

Atletico Madrid have strolled to a 4-0 Champions League victory at the Vicente Calderon as an Astana side missing several key players failed to contain Diego Simeone's rampant team.

The home side, who have now won 22 of their last 26 European home matches, profited from Stanimir Stoilov's decision to leave six first-team players out of his squad ahead of Astana's upcoming title decider against Kairat Almaty.

Antoine Griezmann smashed an early effort against an Astana body, before Diego Godin headed a Gabi corner straight at goalkeeper Nenad Eric as the hosts dominated from the start.

Simeone's men inevitably broke the deadlock midway through the half when midfielder Saul Niguez back-heeled home winger Yannick Ferreira-Carrasco's cross.

Jackson Martinez then saw an effort ruled out for offside, before he grabbed his first Champions League goal for Atletico just after the half-hour mark.

Astana barely threatened the Atletico goal until Jan Oblak was called into action to block Junior Kabananga's strike from the edge of the box early on in the second half.

Atletico were pouring forward at will though, and could have extended their lead even further had Ferreira-Carrasco's enticing ball found a teammate's boot.

The third did come just after 60 minutes when Oliver dinked a smart finish over Eric to wrap up all three points for the La Liga team.

There was still time for the away side's night to get worse, though, as Denis Dedechko turned home a late own goal to complete the rout.

The result sees the Spanish team move to the top of Group C on goal difference after three games.
