Basel boss Paulo Sousa: 'We were not at our best against Porto'

Basel head coach Paulo Sousa admits that his side were off the boil during their defeat to Porto.

Basel head coach Paulo Sousa has conceded that his side did not play to their potential during their 4-0 defeat to Porto in the last-16 phase of the Champions League.

The Swiss outfit exited the competition 5-1 on aggregate, but their manager believes that the outcome of the tie would have been different had they been on top form.

"I am disappointed with the result but proud of our campaign in the Champions League. We were not at our best, they were better at both ends," BBC Sport quotes Sosa as saying.

"Porto have a lot of quality. We couldn't be at our best in either match, we were not the same as in October, November and December - if we had been, this result would not have happened."

Basel navigated a tricky group to reach the last 16 of the tournament, eliminating Liverpool by holding them to a 1-1 draw at Anfield in December to secure the runners-up spot behind Real Madrid.
