Manager Xabi Alonso reportedly has a clause in his Bayer Leverkusen contract where he can join any of his major former clubs next summer.

Xabi Alonso will reportedly be able to leave Bayer Leverkusen for any of his major former clubs at the end of the season.

The Spaniard has just completed one year in charge of the Bundesliga outfit, making an unforeseen major impact at the club.

Since taking over with Leverkusen sitting towards the bottom of the standings, Alonso has transformed the team into challengers for the league title.

After seven matches, Leverkusen are one point ahead of second-placed Stuttgart and two in front of champions Bayern Munich, while they also remain unbeaten and have scored the joint-most goals in the division.

In total, the 41-year-old has recorded 26 wins and just 10 defeats from his 47 matches in charge, a return that has naturally led to Alonso being heavily linked with other jobs.

Director Simon Rolfes has recently insisted that Alonso is committed to the task in hand at Leverkusen, as shown with his recent contract extension.

Nevertheless, despite now having terms until the end of the 2025-26 season, BILD suggests that Leverkusen are still vulnerable to losing their highly-regarded head coach.

The report claims that Alonso has a clause in his contract where he would be able to link up with Liverpool, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich at the conclusion of 2023-24.

While it is plausible that Alonso may wish to spend the next years of his managerial career attempting to cement change in German football, he may have offers arrive from those clubs in the future.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti is expected to depart the Santiago Bernabeu at the end of the campaign, allegedly to take the Brazil job.

Ancelotti has already acknowledged in the media that he would be in favour of Alonso - one of his former players - replacing him at Los Blancos.

Immediate opportunities at Liverpool and Bayern appear less likely right now, particularly at the former with Jurgen Klopp committed to his role at the Premier League giants.

Thomas Tuchel's situation at Bayern may only change if he fails to maintain the club's standing at the top of German football, with the Bavarians having lifted the last 11 Bundesliga trophies.
