Shakhtar Donetsk comfortably beat Real Sociedad

Shakhtar Donetsk beat Real Sociedad 4-0 to boost their hopes of reaching the last 16 of the Champions League.

Shakhtar Donetsk moved into second place in their Champions League group with a comfortable win at home to Real Sociedad.

Luiz Adriano put the Ukrainian champions in front seven minutes before the interval when Dario Srna and Douglas Costa's quick thinking from a corner helped to supply the Brazilian forward, who delicately lobbed the ball past keeper Claudio Bravo.

Donetsk doubled their advantage after Inigo Martinez misjudged his headed clearance, which fell into the path of Alex Teixeira who slotted the ball into the top corner.

Shakhtar made sure of the victory midway through the second period when Teixeira led a counter-attack and found Costa to his left, who drove a fierce first-time shot past Bravo into the near corner.

Real Sociedad's misery was completed when another Donetsk counter attack saw Taison provide an inch-perfect cross for Costa to head home.

The win, twinned with Bayer Leverkusen's 5-0 defeat against Manchester United, means the Ukrainians only need to match the German side's result in the final set of fixtures to progress from Group A.
