Roma are reportedly showing an interest in signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier when the transfer window opens in January.

Roma are reportedly interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier.

There is currently uncertainty surrounding Dier's future in North London, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

The England international was linked with a move in the summer transfer window, but a departure ultimately failed to materialise.

Dier is yet to feature under Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou after falling down the pecking order this season.

Spurs strengthened their backline over the summer, bringing in Micky van de Ven from Wolfburg and youngster Ashley Phillips from Blackburn Rovers.

Postecoglou has preferred to use Van de Ven and Cristian Romero as his first-choice central defensive partnership in the opening stages of the new season.

After being out of the first four matchday squads of the Premier League season, Dier has appeared on the bench in the last two matches.

However, the 29-year-old is still waiting to make his first appearance of the season, and obtaining game time could prove difficult following the impressive form of Van de Ven and Romero.

While Postecoglou has insisted that Dier still features in his plans, the player could be tempted to find regular playing time elsewhere.

According to Calciomercato, Italian side Roma have identified Dier as a potential target for the January transfer window.

The Serie A club are looking to bolster their defensive options following the summer departure of Roger Ibanez and Chris Smalling's persistent injury issues.

Roma boss Jose Mourinho is fully aware of Dier's skillset after working with the defender during his time as Tottenham manager.

While Roma are keen to bring Dier to Italy, they have also identified RB Salzburg's Oumar Solet as a potential alternative.

Dier, who joined Tottenham from Sporting Lisbon in 2014, has made 360 competitive appearances during his time with the club.
