Dave Whelan: Everton not "big enough" for Roberto Martinez

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan believes that Everton are not a "big enough" club for manager Roberto Martinez to leave the Latics for.

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan believes that Everton are not a "big enough" club for manager Roberto Martinez.

The 39-year-old has been touted to replace the outgoing David Moyes at Goodison Park when he joins Manchester United at the end of the season.

"Roberto is always in demand," Whelan told The Mirror. "But he deals with it. He tells me everything and he's the most honest man you'll ever meet.

"If anybody approaches him, he comes to me and says such a club has approached me.

"Whenever he wants to go, I'll release him immediately, but he'll only go to a big, big club and I don't think Everton are big enough."

Martinez guided Wigan to their first major honour as they beat Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup final on Saturday.
