Manchester City are allegedly prepared to pay in the region of €40m (£33.2m) to sign a Lazio midfielder before the end of the January transfer window.

Manchester City are reportedly ready to push for the signing of Lazio midfielder Nicolo Rovella.

Despite returning to form over the past two Premier League fixtures, it has been well-documented that City are in the market for an alternative to the injured Rodri.

With the Euro 2024 winner theoretically returning to the starting lineup once fully fit, Pep Guardiola is realistically in the market for a player with potential to deputise in the meantime.

There has been a particular focus on Serie A with Torino's Samuele Ricci allegedly a target before the Italy international recently signed a new contract.

According to Il Messaggero, attention has now turned to trying to acquire the signature of Rovella over the coming weeks.

City ready to spend big?

The report suggests that City are preparing to pay in the region of €40m (£33.2m) to get a deal for the 23-year-old over the line.

Currently in the final six months of a two-year loan from Juventus, Rovella has made 38 starts and 15 substitute outings for Lazio in all competitions.

Rovella is effectively now a Lazio player having fulfilled the criteria required for a permanent transfer to be processed, and he currently finds himself involved in a race for the Serie A title.

Nevertheless, it is suggested that Lazio officials would be open to a sale to make a substantial quick profit on Rovella, while also possessing the funds required to sign a replacement.

From the player's standpoint, he is said to be settled in Rome, yet it is unclear whether his stance will soften upon any offer being accepted.

Does Luiz remain an option?

As per a recent report, Man City have also been presented with the opportunity to sign Juventus midfielder Douglas Luiz on loan with an obligation to buy.

Luiz has previously been contracted to City without making a senior appearance, eventually proving to be a success in English football with Aston Villa.

Much may depend on who Guardiola views as the most suitable long-term option. While Rovella may be more suited to replicating Rodri's role, Luiz is proven in the Premier League.
