Aberdeen beat Fola Esch in Europa League clash

Northern Ireland striker Niall McGinn is among the goals as Aberdeen record a 3-1 win over Fola Esch in the first leg of their first qualifying round Europa League clash.

Northern Ireland striker Niall McGinn was among the goals as Aberdeen recorded a 3-1 win over Fola Esch in the first leg of their first qualifying round Europa League clash in Scotland.

McGinn, who found the back of the net for his country against Ukraine at Euro 2016, was thrust straight back into action for his club despite being part of the Northern Ireland team that reached the round of 16 in France.

Aberdeen's best chance of a breakthrough inside the opening 20 minutes fell to Ryan Jack after smart work from Jayden Stockley, but the captain's effort was blocked by a sliding defender.

Ash Taylor was next to come close for the home side after meeting a corner from McGinn, but his powerful header flew wide of the post as the visitors struggled to make their mark.

Taylor again came close to registering early in the second period, but Fola Esch goalkeeper Thomas Hym was on hand to make a smart save, before Adam Rooney hit the post in the 67th minute.

The opening goal had been coming and Aberdeen made the breakthrough in the 68th minute when Shay Logan hooked home from close range. The home side's lead lasted barely two minutes, however, as the team from Luxembourg equalised through Julien Klein.

Aberdeen regained the lead in the 92nd minute, however, when McGinn's low shot squirmed under the goalkeeper, before Rooney converted from the penalty spot in the seventh minute of additional time following a handball.

The second leg of the first qualifying round match will take place in Luxembourg next Thursday night.
