Adelaide United squeeze past Western Sydney Wanderers

Western Sydney Wanderers spurn the chance to move within two points of Brisbane Roar at the top of the A-League by losing 1-0 to Adelaide United.

Western Sydney Wanderers have missed the chance to move within two points of Brisbane Roar at the summit of the A-League table by going down 1-0 to Adelaide United at the Hindmarsh Stadium.

The hosts started the brighter of the two teams and saw their early dominance rewarded after just four minutes of play, as Marcelo Carrusca side-footed past goalkeeper Ante Covic to give Josep Gombau's men the lead.

Tony Popovic's side came close to restoring parity in impressive fashion, as Shinji Ono's audacious bicycle kick narrowly whistled over the crossbar on 38 minutes.

Bruce Djite came close to doubling his team's advantage midway through the second half but, having created the space necessary to strike at goal, the Australian saw his left-footed effort sail past the post.

However, the miss was soon rendered academic as the hosts held for a victory, which propels Gombau's team to fourth in the standings.
