AFC Wimbledon's chief executive Erik Samuelson urges Milton Keynes to remove the word Dons from their name.

AFC Wimbledon chief executive Erik Samuelson has called upon Milton Keynes to lose the word Dons from their name ahead of the FA Cup meeting between the two clubs.

In September 2003 a consortium led by Pete Winkelman opted to move Wimbledon 50 miles to Milton Keynes after the club had fallen into administration.

However, it was a decision that did not prove popular with a number of fans, who decided to form AFC. Since then, the newly-formed club have risen up to League Two following five promotions.

As a result of victories during their respective FA Cup replays, the two sides will now meet for the first time later this month.

Speaking about coming up against Winkelman's team, Samuelson has insisted that he will only shake hands with the MK chairman if they lose the Dons tag.

"If he offers me his hand, as long as it's got a letter in it saying they agree that what they did was wrong and that they will drop the name Dons, I'll shake it," he said. "Otherwise I think we'll just move on. I think it reminds them and everybody of how they originated. They don't have much to do with Wimbledon.

"I'm not going to agitate for it, I think it would be the better thing to do but that's for them to decide."

MK Dons currently play their football in League One.
