Mikel Arteta: 'John Obi Mikel could have been sent off'

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta believes that Chelsea's John Obi Mikel was lucky to escape a red card during the 0-0 draw between the two sides on Monday evening.

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta has revealed that he has a swollen ankle after being caught late by John Obi Mikel during his side's 0-0 draw with Chelsea on Monday evening.

Mikel was fractionally late as the two contested a ball in midfield, and Arteta has admitted that he was surprised that the Nigerian international wasn't dismissed for the challenge.

The 31-year-old told Sky Sports News: "On that moment, I think that he caught me high. I've got a big swollen ankle.

"I think that he got late on the ball. You ask me if it is intentional or not? I believe that is why the referee didn't give him a red card."

Arsenal missed out on the opportunity to regain top spot in the Premier League table by picking up just a point at the Emirates Stadium.
