Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has insisted that the club must sack Unai Emery following a difficult start to the 2019-20 season.

The Gunners boss has come under serious pressure following a week during which Arsenal lost 1-0 at Sheffield United ahead of throwing away a two-goal lead at home to Crystal Palace.

Moreover, the sight of captain Granit Xhaka swearing at supporters who were booing at him as he left the field with 30 minutes left against Palace served as a clear sign that all was not well at the Emirates.

Speaking on the subject of Emery, Campbell told AFTV's Kevin Campbell Show: "What has Unai Emery done to make us better? I used to back managers, but I don't back managers anymore because it's wrong. When you back managers, you get stuck with that manager. And I don't want to be stuck to any managers.

"I want Arsenal to progress and to be able to go and challenge. I don't see it! So, I am calling out Unai Emery, right now because I am not seeing that.I think we're regressing – in my opinion, Unai Emery, thanks for trying, but we're going to go a different direction.

"The board should be getting him out and getting in someone like an [Massimiliano] Allegri or someone of that ilk. Luis Enrique, I like Luis Enrique – people even mentioned [Mikel] Arteta. What about Patrick Vieira?"

It is claimed that Arsenal players were angry at Emery for failing to support Xhaka after the 2-2 draw with Roy Hodgson's side.

Emery, whose treatment of Mesut Ozil has also come under question, declared that Xhaka had behaved 'wrongly' towards the home crowd.
