Arsene Wenger: 'More firepower required at Arsenal this season'

Arsene Wenger admits that Arsenal lacked efficiency in front of goal last season, having scored fewer goals than any other side in the Premier League's top four.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confessed that his side need to improve their scoring rate this season if they are to have any chance of winning the Premier League.

The Gunners scored 65 goals in the top flight last time out, which was the lowest tally of any team in the top four.

It was also Arsenal's lowest-scoring season in nine years, with only Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud reaching double figures across a campaign that saw the North-London outfit finish second.

Wenger has now targeted an improvement in front of goal, but has backed his current forward players to deliver should they remain fit over the duration of the season.

"That's one of the domains where last year we were not the most efficient," he is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News when asked about the lack of goals. "We were the highest team in expected chances created.

"We were the highest team in quality of chances created in the final third. We have Sanchez, we have [Theo] Walcott. We're not at our level in the finishing qualities and I think that is where we want to improve. Our finishing last year was of a worse quality than the year before and we had the same players.

"That means that it's a bit cyclical. I think it's linked with the fact that we had some players out for a long period last season and hopefully we will have everybody available for much longer this season."

Arsenal have so far missed out on one of their attacking targets this summer, with Jamie Vardy turning down a £20m move and instead penning a new deal with champions Leicester City.
