Aston Villa fall to late winner from Leyton Orient

Leyton Orient surprise Aston Villa with a 1-0 victory in the Capital One Cup thanks to a late header from Romain Vincelot.

Romain Vincelot scored a late winner to hand Leyton Orient a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa in the second round of the Capital One Cup on Wednesday evening.

Villa looked lively from the first whistle, but were forced to wait until midway through the first half for their first clear chance to arrive as Nathan Baker headed wide from an Ashley Westwood corner.

Dave Mooney should have given the visitors the lead against the run of play 10 minutes before the break, but he was unable to direct a free header on target following good work on the wing from Elliot Omozusi.

The balance of the game continued in the same fashion in the early stages of the second half, with Kieran Richardson forced to try his luck with a 30-yard strike which drifted wide.

Baker was once again a threat in the air on the hour mark, but he failed to find the target for a second time as he nodded over from close range.

Shay Given, handed a rare chance in the Villa goal, was forced into action to keep the scores level in the 67th minute, with the Irish shot-stopper getting a vital hand on Mathieu Baudry's header.

There was still time for a dramatic twist to arrive, though, as Vincelot arrived at the back post in the 87th minute to head in Bradley Pritchard's cross and send Orient through.
