Marc Wilmots sacked as Belgium manager

Marc Wilmots is sacked as manager of Belgium in the wake of their Euro 2016 quarter-final exit at the hands of Wales.

The Belgian Football Association has confirmed that Marc Wilmots has been sacked as manager of the national team.

Belgium went into Euro 2016 this summer as the highest-ranked team in the tournament, but crashed out at the hands of surprise package Wales in the quarter-finals.

That 3-1 defeat in Lille proved to be his last match in charge of the Red Devils, who failed to live up to expectations in France.

"The [Belgian FA's] Technical Commission have made an evaluation of Euro 2016 and have declared that the intended goals have not been reached," read a statement.

"There is a common sense that the team needs a new impulse to lead this group towards a top result at a major tournament."

Wilmots also took charge of Belgium at the World Cup two years ago, but once again their golden generation was eliminated in the quarter-finals.

In all, Wilmots took charge of 51 matches as Belgium manager, recording a win percentage of 66.7%.
