Preview: Blackburn Rovers vs. Wycombe Wanderers - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Saturday's Championship fixture between Blackburn Rovers and Wycombe Wanderers, including team news and injury news.

Blackburn Rovers and Wycombe Wanderers head into their second Championship fixture of the season both looking to hit back from opening-weekend defeats.

Newcomers Wycombe got their campaign underway with a 1-0 defeat against Rotherham United, while Blackburn were on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline versus Bournemouth.

Match preview

Having pushed Bournemouth and Newcastle United all the way on away territory, Tony Mowbray will be desperately disappointed to have nothing to show from two promising performances.

However, despite the limited activity in the transfer market, there are signs that Rovers are progressing in the right direction as they bid to mount a playoff bid.

The acquisition of Daniel Ayala on a free transfer earlier this week can only help their cause, with the Spaniard able to offer invaluable experience at this level of football.

Although the centre-back may have to wait for his debut, his arrival will lift the mood at Ewood Park ahead of a game which they will feel they must win to generate some momentum.

While finding themselves in a similar position to their hosts after matchday one, Wycombe head into this contest with less pressure on their shoulders.

Despite acknowledging that his team need points on the board as soon as possible, Gareth Ainsworth will treat their groundbreaking campaign as a marathon rather than a sprint.

Succumbing to potential rivals Rotherham came as a significant blow, but adjustments are naturally having to be made both on and off the pitch given their surprise rise up the league pyramid.

With a free week courtesy of their early exit in the EFL Cup, Ainsworth will be hopeful that his players have an extra spring in their step when taking to the pitch in the North-West.

Team News

Adam Armstrong should come back into the Blackburn XI after beginning the EFL Cup tie against his former club among the substitutes.

Joe Rothwell is also pushing for a start after making a positive impression against the Magpies.

If Ayala features in the squad this weekend, it will more than likely be on the bench.

Dominic Gape is back in contention for Wycombe after serving a one-match suspension.

However, Adebayo Akinfenwa remains on the sidelines as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.

David Stockdale and Ryan Tafazolli may have to remain patient in their wait for a first league start for their new club.

Blackburn Rovers possible starting lineup:
Kaminski; Nyambe, Lenihan, Williams, Bell; Travis, Holtby, Johnson; Rankin-Costello, Armstrong, Rothwell

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Allsop; Grimmer, Stewart, Charles, Jacobson; Bloomfield, Pattison; Wheeler, Horgan, Onyedinma; Kashket

We say: Blackburn Rovers 2-1 Wycombe Wanderers

Their respective setbacks last weekend have put both teams under pressure to get at least a point on the board on Saturday. Although Wycombe may play with greater freedom on their first away trip in this division, we expect Blackburn to ultimately show more in the final third.
