Preview: Huddersfield Town vs. Blackburn Rovers - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's Championship clash between Huddersfield Town and Blackburn Rovers, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Huddersfield Town and Blackburn Rovers square off at the John Smith's Stadium with just one point separating the clubs in the Championship standings.

The teams have prevailed in just one of their last four outings, leaving them in 14th and 11th position respectively ahead of Tuesday's fixture.

At one stage this season, Blackburn looked ideally placed to be everyone's dark horses for promotion as they scored goals for fun in the second tier.

While they remain with the joint-best attack in the division, a run of five points from six matches has resulted in Tony Mowbray's side losing their fear factor.

Just half a dozen goals have been netted during the latest period, the most recent being a late equaliser in the 1-1 draw against struggling Sheffield Wednesday.

Despite remaining in second place in the Championship goalscoring charts, Adam Armstrong has contributed just one strike since December 5, highlighting how much Rovers rely on the efforts of their star striker.

As far as Huddersfield are concerned, they will be relieved to return to home territory after suffering a fourth defeat in six on their travels.

Although Barnsley required a late goal to prevail 2-1 at Oakwell, it continued a trend for Carlos Corberan's side with the club's away form undermining their efforts at the John Smith's Stadium.

The Terriers have recorded four successive victories at their Yorkshire ground, keeping clean sheets in wins over Queens Park Rangers, Sheffield Wednesday and Watford.

Remaining 12 points clear of the relegation zone, Corberan will feel that his side can now focus on reducing the eight-point gap between themselves and the top six.

However, with another home fixture against Reading to come on January 2, the Spaniard knows that his players must rise to the occasion if they wish to stay as outsiders for promotion.

Team News

Despite the short turnaround, Corberan could look to select many of the players which started the game at Barnsley.

Adama Diakhaby may get the nod over Isaac Mbenza on the right flank, while Alex Pritchard is an alternative in midfield.

Stewart Downing, Bradley Dack and Ben Brereton are all pushing for an appearance in the Blackburn XI.

Lewis Holtby and Sam Gallagher may find themselves among the replacements after ineffective displays on Boxing Day.

Huddersfield Town possible starting lineup:
Schofield; Pipa, Edmonds-Green, Sarr, Toffolo; Eiting, Hogg, O'Brien; Diakhaby, Campbell, Bacuna

Blackburn Rovers possible starting lineup:
Kaminski; Nyambe, Lenihan, Ayala; Douglas; Downing, Johnson, Rothwell; Elliott, Armstrong, Brereton

We say: Huddersfield Town 1-2 Blackburn Rovers

Although Huddersfield have put together an excellent home record, we feel that it is only a matter of time before Rovers rediscover their ruthless streak in the final third. With that in mind, expect the visitors to deliver an improved performance on Tuesday night, one which could result in maximum points.
