Blackpool survive despite Charlton Athletic loss

Blackpool stay in the Championship for at least another season despite a 2-0 loss at home to Charlton Athletic.

Blackpool will compete for at least another season in the Championship despite a 3-0 home loss to Charlton Athletic this afternoon.

Blackpool started the game brightly, with Stephen Dobbie firing just wide inside the opening 10 minutes and testing Ben Hamer in the Charlton goal shortly after.

Charlton had the lion's share of possession, but were unable to carve the home side open to create any chances in a dull first half.

On the stroke of half time, Blackpool's Andy Keogh showed a rare glimpse of quality when he sent a fizzing effort towards goal that flew just over the bar.

Less than a minute after the restart, Astrit Ajdarevic teed up Marvin Sordell, whose powerful effort was turned away by Matt Gilks.

Dobbie continued to threaten for the hosts though, and sent a scuffed effort just wide of the far post.

The miss proved costly, as Callum Harriott netted his third goal of the week to put Charlton ahead in the 61st minute.

The home side began to pile forward in search of an equaliser, and Dorian Dervite had to throw his body in the way of Neal Bishop's goalbound effort.

With less than 10 minutes to go, Jonathan Obika set up Harriott who smashed home and the winger completed his hat-trick in the last minute of the game.

Despite the loss, Blackpool's Championship safety was confirmed after Doncaster Rovers lost 1-0 at the league champions Leicester City, and Birmingham City drew 2-2 away at Bolton Wanderers.
