Preview: Bolton Wanderers vs. Sheffield Wednesday

Sports Mole previews the Championship encounter between Bolton Wanderers and Sheffield Wednesday.

Bolton Wanderers will look to extend the gap between themselves and the Championship relegation zone with a win over Sheffield Wednesday at the Macron Stadium.

However, the Owls will also be looking for a victory to help turn around their faltering start to the season.

Bolton boss Neil Lennon will be hoping that his side's 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers is a turning point in their underwhelming season so far.

The Trotters began their season with a draw against Derby County before defeats to Middlesbrough and MK Dons followed.

Lennon's men managed to end their losing run with a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest and followed up with a clean sheet at Blackburn.

Bolton finally won their first game of the campaign against Wolves to move the Trotters up to 17th.

The Northern Irish coach may also look to improve his squad with the possible signings of James Wilson and Kevin Nolan, with both being linked with a switch to the Championship side.

Meanwhile, Bolton are said to be one of a number of clubs rumoured to be interested in Rangers' Fraser Aird.

Sheffield Wednesday

Owls fans may be forgiven for thinking that their side will not be mounting a promotion challenge this year.

However, Wednesday forward Atdhe Nuihu is confident that Wednesday will feature prominently in the promotion picture, despite an indifferent start to the season.

The opening day saw the Owls beat Bristol City 2-1, but a loss against Ipswich Town and two draws saw the Yorkshiremen lose ground on the leaders.

Further defeats at the hands of Middlesbrough and Burnley have left Wednesday languishing above the relegation zone.

However, manager Carlos Carvalhal will hope that the introduction of Barry Bannan, Daniel Pudil and Fernando Forestieri to his squad has an impact.

The Owls coach suggested that their season had started in earnest after the international break, although some fans may think that a victory will truly mark the start of their campaign.

Team News

Bolton are likely to be without Neil Danns after he was knocked unconscious during the win over Wolves.

While Dorian Dervite has completed a suspension, ligament damage sustained in training should keep him out of action.

His place in the heart of defence is expected to go to either Derik Osede or Prince-Desir Gouano.

Wednesday are likely to stick with teenage keeper Joe Wildsmith, in the absence of first-choice stopper Keiren Westwood.

Bolton Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Amos; Gouano, Osede, Wilson, Moxey; Feeney, Danns, Davies, Silva; Clough, Madine

Sheffield Wednesday possible starting lineup:
Wildsmith; Palmer, Loovens, Lees, Hutchinson; Lee, Pudil, Bannan, Wallace; Nuhiu, Forestieri

Head To Head

While Wednesday have won 51 of the 116 meetings between the sides, their recent record against the Trotters makes for grim reading for Owls fans.

Indeed, of the last 12 encounters the Yorkshire outfit have won only two, including a 5-0 victory at Hillsborough when the club were last in the Premier League.

Bolton's most recent triumph over Wednesday came back in January when goals from Liam Feeney and Darren Pratley earned them a 2-1 win.

We say: Bolton 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday

This game could be a difficult one to call, with neither side in terrific form. However, the Trotters' 2-1 win over playoff-chasing Wolves could be their catalyst for a change in fortunes.
