Bournemouth set a record points total in the Premier League courtesy of their 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.

Bournemouth set a record points total in the Premier League courtesy of their 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Marcos Senesi sent the Cherries on their way in Dorset, with the defender registering in the 13th minute, before Enes Unal and Justin Kluivert netted in the second half of the clash.

The victory moved Bournemouth onto 48 points from 35 matches, and the total represents their record tally in the Premier League, still with three games left to play.

Andoni Iraola has set the record in his first season in charge, and the Cherries are currently 10th in the table, level on points with ninth-placed Chelsea and just one point behind eighth-placed West Ham United.

Bournemouth will now take on Arsenal (A), Brentford (H) and Chelsea (A) in their final three matches of the Premier League campaign.

Bournemouth set record points tally in Premier League

Bournemouth finished 15th in the Premier League last season on their return to the top flight, but they are comfortably on course to improve on that this term.

The club's best-ever finish in the top flight was ninth in 2016-17, when they claimed 46 points, so it could also be a historic season in terms of their final spot in the division.

Bournemouth defender Adam Smith said after the clash with Brighton that the current squad is "the most talented group" the club have had "in years".

"It is the most talented group we've had here in years. It is a great result and amazing to beat our points total, that was our aim," Smith told Sky Sports News.

Bournemouth now aiming for highest-ever Premier League finish

"Today was tough, we knew they'd have most of the ball. We had to dig in and they didn't have many clear-cut chances and we're so dangerous in transition and that's what we did. It is a great result.

"Every wide area and up top, we've got so much pace. We're such a dynamic team and that is how we play and it is causing team issues."

Smith also hailed his manager Iraola, with the 41-year-old making a strong impression at the helm after arriving from Rayo Vallecano last year.

"He's been amazing. It was a transition when he first came in and we struggled in first 10 games to get a grip on how he wanted to play. As soon as we got to grips with it we went on a run and haven't looked back since. He's done a great job and I'm looking forward to the last few games and trying to push into the top 10," he added.

Bournemouth are only six points behind sixth-placed Manchester United, although the Red Devils have a game in hand on the Cherries.
