Brentford edge out Bournemouth at Griffin Park

Brentford secure a vital win in their push for promotion as they defeat Bournemouth 3-1 in their Championship contest at Griffin Park.

Brentford got their promotion push back on course courtesy of a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth in their Championship clash at Griffin Park.

The visitors were the first to threaten as Simon Francis found space to run down the right and his cross was met by Callum Wilson, but his low drive was well saved by David Button.

The stop from Button would prove to be crucial as Brentford took the lead when Pritchard lifted a cross into the box which was picked up by Jonathan Douglas, and the midfielder managed to turn his man and rifle a shot into the bottom corner.

Jota came close to doubling the home side's lead when he cut in from the right flank and drilled a low effort towards goal, but Boruc was on hand to make the save.

Minutes later, Pritchard should have beaten the Bournemouth keeper when played through on goal, but he could only poke his shot wide of the target.

The home side would rue those missed chances as Eddie Howe's men found an equaliser when Marc Pugh won a footrace to reach a ball over the top. His initial effort hit the post, but he reacted first to turn the ball home.

However, just before the break, Pritchard drove a free kick at goal from 30 yards, which should have been a comfortable save for Boruc, but he somehow managed to punch the ball into his own net and hand the Bees the lead.

After the break, Bournemouth responded as Pugh and Wilson combined to set up the striker in the penalty area, only for his strike to be blocked by the feet of Button.

The Cherries came even closer minutes later as Ryan Fraser smashed a shot through the arms of Button, but the ball crashed off the post and back into the path of the striker, who hit the side-netting with his rebound.

Andre Gray should have put the game beyond Bournemouth when he latched onto a cross at the back post, but somehow directed his free header over the bar.

Bournemouth continued to push to get back into the game and Wilson forced another save from Button, who was alert to keep out the striker's effort from close range.

The home side went inches away from wrapping up the three points as Jota curled a free kick towards goal. His strike beat the hand of Boruc but clattered off the bar and bounced to safety.

Brentford finally sealed their win in stoppage time when substitute Chris Long slotted the ball past Boruc on the counter-attack.
