Brighton piled on the pressure and nearly took the lead when Andrea Orlandi's curling strike hit the woodwork on 18 minutes. A minute later, Brighton hit the woodwork again, with Dean Hammond's shot going close.
Craig Mackail-Smith hit the woodwork for the third time for Brighton on 36 minutes when his header crashed off the bar.
The half-time whistle blew with the score surprisingly still at 0-0.
