Half-Time Report: Fleetwood Town fail to turn domination into goals

Fleetwood Town are unable to turn domination into goals during the first half of the final of the League Two playoffs.

Fleetwood Town dominated the opening 45 minutes of their Wembley contest against Burton Albion in the final of the League Two playoffs this afternoon, but Graham Alexander's team were unable to break the deadlock.

Fleetwood, who finished the season in fourth spot, started much the brighter of the two sides, with their striker David Ball having two chances within the opening three minutes.

The first saw him control a scuffed shot by Iain Hume before seeing his powerful strike palmed over by Burton goalkeeper Dean Lyness. Then, from the resulting corner, Lyness was again on hand to scoop clear Ball's header from close range.

Next to try his luck in Fleetwood colours was Nathan Pond in the 14th minute but, after Burton had failed to clear a corner, the defender couldn't keep his effort on target from eight yards out.

Alexander's side continued to dominate proceedings as the half wore on, but they failed to test Lyness again, while up the other end Fleetwood keeper Chris Maxwell was rarely called into action before the referee blew for the break.

If the two sides are not separated come the final whistle, extra time and possibly penalties will be used to determine which club will gain promotion to League One.
