Burton Albion captain John McGrath close to full fitness

Burton Albion manager Gary Rowett reveals that club captain John McGrath is "not far away" from returning to full fitness.

Burton Albion manager Gary Rowett has revealed that club captain John McGrath is "not far away" from returning to full fitness.

The 32-year-old midfielder returned to action in November following eight months on the sidelines with a torn ligament in his foot.

"He's not far away," said Rowett. "He's played little bits of first-team games – he played 45 minutes against Crewe and did really well.

"I still think there is a little bit of improvement to be made in terms of his fitness. Obviously, until he plays more games that's always going to be a little bit of an issue.

"But it's great to have Macca back."

McGrath, who moved to the Pirelli Stadium from Tamworth in May 2007, made 34 appearances for the Brewers last season.
