Chelsea captain John Terry: 'Old-school defenders dying out'

Chelsea captain John Terry claims that there is a shortage of "old-school" defenders in European football.

John Terry has claimed that there is a shortage of "old-school" defenders in European football.

The Chelsea captain, 34, led the club to Capital One Cup glory over Tottenham Hotspur, scoring the first goal in their 2-0 win at Wembley.

Terry, whose future with the London club was confirmed by Jose Mourinho earlier today, believes the art of defending is dying out.

"There's a shortage of centre-halves in Europe for the sort of old-school defenders like myself, who's prepared to threw himself in front of everything," he said, speaking to The Mirror.

"I think they are a rarity nowadays. You look at Kurt Zouma and Gary Cahill and we're OK at Chelsea, but across the world there is a shortage."

Chelsea head to West Ham United tomorrow evening as they look to maintain their lead at the top of the Premier League.
