Former Chelsea assistant Ray Wilkins says that the players must take the lion's share of responsibility for the Blues' poor form this season.

Former Chelsea assistant Ray Wilkins has said that the players must take the lion's share of responsibility for the Blues' poor form this season.

A 1-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion means that Andre Villas-Boas's side have only won once in their last seven games in all competitions.

Rumours that are circulating around Stamford Bridge indicate that owner Roman Abramovich may already be considering a replacement for the Portuguese manager.

However Wilkins, who was sacked as Carlo Ancelotti's assistant just over a year ago, believes that the players should take more of the blame.

"I think the players have to take 75 per cent of the responsibility," the 55-year-old told talkSPORT. "They're the ones who go on the pitch and they're the ones who play and that's the case right through football.

"At the end of the day the coach can only coach, the coach can only ask them to do what he desires but once you cross that white line you have to get on with that situation and you have to play."

Wilkins played for Chelsea between 1973 and 1979.
