Preview: Doncaster Rovers vs. Walsall - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Tuesday's League Two clash between Doncaster Rovers and Walsall, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Two teams still in the playoff mix in the League Two table will lock horns on Tuesday evening, with Doncaster Rovers welcoming Walsall to the Eco-Power Stadium.

Doncaster are currently 12th in the division, seven points behind seventh-placed Crawley Town, while Walsall occupy ninth, three points off the playoff spots in the fourth tier of English football.

Doncaster have been victorious in each of their last six League Two matches, including a 3-0 success over Morecambe on Saturday afternoon, with the team making a late push for the playoffs.

It is still a big ask at this stage, sitting 12th, seven points behind seventh-placed Crawley, but it is not impossible, and their current form is excellent, scoring eight times in their last four games and conceding zero.

Grant McCann's side are unbeaten in their last seven League Two matches, winning six, while they have only lost once in the fourth tier of English football since the end of January.

Doncaster, who finished 18th in League Two last season, have picked up 35 points from their 20 home league matches this term, winning 11 times in the process.

Rovers, who have three straight league games to come at home against Walsall, Accrington Stanley and Barrow, will be bidding to end a three-game losing run against the former on Tuesday night.

Walsall were 3-1 winners in the reverse match between the two sides earlier this season, while they also triumphed 2-0 in the corresponding fixture during the 2022-23 campaign.

The Saddlers are also in the playoff hunt at this stage of the season, picking up 62 points from their 41 matches, which is enough for ninth position, three points behind seventh-placed Crawley.

Walsall are also in good form, winning their last two matches against Salford City and Tranmere Rovers, while they have lost just once in the fourth tier of English football since March 9.

Mat Sadler's side have three straight home league games after this one against Notts County, Swindon Town and Bradford City, so a positive result on Tuesday evening would lead them nicely into those fixtures.

Walsall have found it difficult to show consistency on the road this season despite their solid spot in the table, only picking up 23 points from their 21 matches away from their own stadium.

Team News

Doncaster are expected to be without the services of Harrison Biggins, who was forced off in the first half of the contest with Morecambe on Saturday afternoon.

Biggins is likely to be replaced by Tommy Rowe, who featured off the bench at the weekend.

Joe Ironside has scored 14 times in League Two during the 2023-24 campaign, and he will lead the Doncaster line on Tuesday night, while Luke Molyneux will feature down the right off the back of his two-goal showing in the clash with Morecambe.

Walsall have not reported any fresh fitness concerns from their clash with Tranmere, and due to the impressiveness of the performance, it could be a case of same again in terms of team selection.

Jamille Matt has scored five league goals this term and will again feature in the final third of the field, and he is expected to be joined by Josh Gordon.

Isaac Hutchinson has scored 10 times from central midfield this season, meanwhile, and the 23-year-old will also be in the Walsall XI for the midweek fixture.

Doncaster Rovers possible starting lineup:
Lo-Tutala; Sterry, Olowu, Wood, Maxwell; Bailey, Craig; Molyneux, Rowe, Adelakun; Ironside

Walsall possible starting lineup:
Smith; Adegboyega, Okagbue, Allen; Foulkes, Stirk, Hutchinson, Comley, L Gordon; J Gordon, Matt

We say: Doncaster Rovers 1-1 Walsall

There has not been a draw between these two teams since January 2008, but we are predicting a 1-1 on Tuesday night. Doncaster are in excellent form and have that winning feeling, but Walsall have enough quality to end the home side's run in the intriguing contest.
