However, it was Juventus who took the lead in the 13th minute when Alvaro Morata's shot was spilled by Roman Weidenfeller and Carlos Tevez reacted quickly to slot home the rebound.
Dortmund hit back and they were level five minutes later when Marco Reus pounced on a slip from Giorgio Chiellini to race through and fire into the corner past Gianluigi Buffon.
Morata and Leonardo Bonucci both headed over as the home side looked to regain their lead.
Both teams were then dealt a blow as Lukasz Piszczek and Andrea Pirlo were forced off with injuries.
With three minutes of the first half remaining Juventus scored their second goal of the evening as Paul Pogba squared the ball for Morata to slide home from close range
After the break, substitute Oliver Kirch had a sight of goal for the visitors, but after latching on to a loose ball inside the box he was unable to keep his volley down.

They had another chance soon after when Immobile's shot from a tight angle was saved by Buffon.
As the game entered the final 20 minutes Tevez came within inches of grabbing a third for Juventus when he collected the ball on the edge of the box and drilled a shot just wide.
Tevez then saw his powerful effort beaten away by Weidenfeller and from the resulting corner Chiellini directed his header over the bar.
Juventus had another great chance to extend their lead when Roberto Pereyra raced onto Morata's pass, but he dragged his shot wide of the far post.
It proved to be the final big chance for either side, as Juventus held onto take a slim advantage into next month's second leg.
