Montpellier enjoyed the majority of possession in the opening stages of the game and threatened through a long-range shot from M'Baye Niang early on.

Lille grew into the game as it went on and should have taken the lead from a corner, but Saloman Kalou wasted a free header in the area.

The home side went ahead on 19 minutes through Marko Basa, who headed home from a free kick.

Vincent Enyeama produced a fantastic save to keep out Daniel Congre's header from a free kick.

Lille pressed early on in the second half as they looked to grab a second goal and came close through Djibril Sidibe, whose powerful strike was kept out by the goalkeeper.

Nolan Roux made it 2-0 on 58 minutes when he smashed home after David Rozehnal's header rebounded off the crossbar.

Remy Cabella appealed for a penalty after being brought down by Florent Balmont, but the referee waved away his protests.
