Newcastle United boss John Carver urges team to "have a go" at Anfield

Newcastle United boss John Carver tells his players to "have a go" at Anfield when they face Liverpool in tonight's Premier League encounter.

Newcastle United manager John Carver has challenged his players to "have a go" at Anfield when they take on Liverpool in the Premier League this evening.

The Magpies have not won a league game at the Merseyside ground since 1994 and they head into the contest on the back of four defeats in a row.

However, Liverpool's form has faced questions of its own following back-to-back league defeats to Manchester United and Arsenal.

Despite their recent dip, the club remain in contention for FA Cup glory after sealing a 1-0 win over Blackburn Rovers in the quarter-final replay last week.

"They are in the semi-final of the cup and still have a chance, in my opinion, of finishing in the top four, because they have got so many good players," Carver told reporters.

"Anfield - the history of football, for me, is Anfield. If you don't want to go there and have a go, then don't be a professional footballer."

Newcastle are 13th in the table, while Liverpool reside sixth, but have the chance to close the gap between themselves and fourth-placed Manchester City to four points with a win tonight.
