Liverpool introduce £40,000 academy salary cap

Liverpool introduce a salary cap of £40,000 for academy players in the first year of a professional contract.

Liverpool have introduced a salary cap of £40,000 on their academy players.

The policy, which has been backed by first-team manager Jurgen Klopp, is designed to help promising young players remain focused on their career and not earn too much money early on.

The cap means that 17-year-old players in the first year of a professional contract will not be able to earn more than £40,000 a year.

It is the latest of a number of changes implemented by Liverpool to their academy, the most notable of which has seen the intake drop from 240 players to 170.

Klopp handed nine academy players their debuts for the club last season, while the likes of Ovie Ejaria, Ben Woodburn and Trent Alexander-Arnold were all heavily involved during pre-season.
