Liverpool name ex-Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp as new manager

Former Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp succeeds Brendan Rodgers as Liverpool manager, agreeing a reported three-year contract with the Premier League side.

Liverpool have confirmed the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as their new manager on a reported three-year contract.

The German, 48, takes over at Anfield following the departure of Brendan Rodgers, who was sacked after the Reds' 1-1 draw with Everton in Sunday's Merseyside derby.

Rodgers was relieved of his duties after failing to win a trophy or reach a final in his three full seasons at the club. The Northern Irishman went close to ending Liverpool's 24-year wait for a top-flight crown in 2013-14 when the Reds won just one of their last three games to finish two points behind Manchester City.

Klopp returns to management four months after he left Borussia Dortmund to take a sabbatical following a disappointing 2014-15 campaign with the Bundesliga outfit.

He won the 2011 and 2012 league titles, as well as leading BVB to the 2013 Champions League final, but Dortmund were bottom of the table midway through last term before they rallied towards the end of the season to finish in a Europa League place.

With most of the Liverpool squad away on international duty at the moment, Klopp, who is just the second German after Felix Magath to manage in the Premier League, has nine days to get used to his new surroundings before taking charge of his first match away at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, October 17.

He inherits a team lying 10th in the Premier League, six points behind leaders Manchester City and three behind the top four in what is a congested top half of the table.
