Wijnaldum: 'Matching City will be difficult'

Georginio Wijnaldum insists that Liverpool "have the quality" to win the Premier League title, but acknowledges the difficulty of keeping pace with Manchester City.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has confessed that it will be "really difficult" keeping pace with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

The Reds have brought in £175m worth of talent during the summer, more than a third of which went on goalkeeper Alisson Becker, as they attempt to improve on last season's fourth-place finish.

Wijnaldum hopes that Liverpool have what it takes to end their long wait for title success, but concedes that his side need to win near enough every weekend between now and the middle of May if they are to do so.

"I think we have the quality to compete with them but I also thought we had the quality last season," he told reporters. "If City are going to play like they did last season then it will be really hard because they only lost two games and had a few draws.

"If you want to compete with them you can barely drop points. That's really difficult but something we look forward to because you want to compete with the others and City are one of the best. So we will go for it."

Wijnaldum played the full 90 minutes as Liverpool cruised to a 4-0 win over West Ham United in their opening 2018-19 fixture.
