Liverpool have joined the race to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho, according to reports.

The 22-year-old Portuguese international has been on the radar of several Premier League teams for a number of months, following promising displays for club and country.

According to the Daily Star, Brendan Rodgers is keen to add the highly-rated defensive midfielder to his squad, with the future of Steven Gerrard in doubt.

Carvalho, who is said to be valued at £37m, has been on the books at Sporting since 2005.
