Ashley Young: 'Derby County showed more intensity than Manchester United'

Manchester United defender Ashley Young says that Derby County 'showed more intensity' than the Premier League side in Tuesday's EFL Cup tie at Old Trafford.

Defender Ashley Young has said that Manchester United did not show enough "intensity" against Derby County in the EFL Cup.

United started and finished strongly in Tuesday's fixture at Old Trafford but after the clubs had played out a 2-2 draw, Derby prevailed 8-7 in a penalty shootout.

Manager Jose Mourinho has suggested that United failed to improve on a below-par showing against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend, and Young has agreed that United were outfought by their Championship opponents.

The full-back told MUTV: "I think they had more intensity than we did.

"When you play these games, you have to show that intensity and go further than the opposition. We didn't do that and I think we got punished. They won the game."

United are unbeaten in five matches in all competitions, but sit eight points off the pace in the Premier League table.
