Rio Ferdinand backs Manchester United for top-three finish

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand believes that Manchester United will finish the season in the top three and could win a domestic trophy.

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has backed his former side to finish in the top three this season.

The Queens Park Rangers centre-back believes that the Red Devils will qualify for the Champions League and could even win a domestic cup.

"Six weeks ago I think you'd be thinking hopefully they'd get in the Champions League. Looking at them now, I think they'll finish definitely in third place, definite Champions League, then maybe they'll get one of the cups," the 36-year-old told Sky Sports News.

"If they continue on the run they're on, then who knows? They could go into second or first, but I think Champions League this season would have been something they were asking for and I think they'll finish in that comfortably.

"[Louis van Gaal] had a sticky start, but the lads seem to be getting a better understanding of what he wants and you can see that in the results in the last six or seven games. Michael Carrick coming back has been a huge plus for them."

Van Gaal's side endured a patchy start to this year's campaign, winning just one of their opening five league matches.

However, the Red Devils are currently in good form, winning six of their last seven matches, seeing them rise to third in the table.
