Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says that stewarding is a more appropriate way of combating bad crowd behaviour than setting up nets in grounds.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson doesn't believe that putting nets up in front of supporters is the right answer to combat unsavoury crowd behaviour in football grounds.

The debate regarding netting has been in the spotlight after United defender Rio Ferdinand was struck in the face with an object during the Red Devils' 3-2 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

"We've seen netting behind goals in some grounds but I'm not so sure," The Independent quotes Ferguson as saying.

"There have been a couple of occasions. It happened in our game at Chelsea and it happened in the derby. But it's not a consistent thing and I think stewarding is a better policy."

Meanwhile, Man City captain Vincent Kompany has claimed that the relevant governing bodies should not treat the fans like "animals" when they consider what action needs to be taken.
