Sir Alex Ferguson says that Manchester United can eclipse Chelsea's record points tally this season.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has no doubts that his side can surpass Chelsea's record points haul this season.

The Blues set a record of 95 points in the Premier League at the end of the 2004-05 campaign, and United need to win their remaining five fixtures to finish the year on 96 points.

Having already outscored the Londoners' tally of 76 from that season, Ferguson believes that they can set a new Premier League record come the end of the term.

"If we win the league, the team has to be considered in terms of other teams. It's not beyond the team [beating 95 points] at all," Ferguson told ESPN. "If you are asking if Manchester United can win five games in a row, well how many times have we done that? So it's not beyond us.

"What may create more awareness of the side we have this year is how many points we get. We won the league in 1993 with something like 84 points. We have also won leagues with 91 points and been second with 91 points, to Chelsea. That has to be considered in terms of judgment against other teams, but it doesn't bother me, really."

United can wrap up their 20th Premier League title by beating Aston Villa on Monday night.
